In India, sandalwood is mainly distributed on the Deccan Plateau. The total extent of its distribution is over 90% in the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It generally occurs in the dry deciduous forests of Deccan Plateau at the edge of the Western Ghats Range. It thrives best under rainfall conditions of 500-2000 mm and at elevations of 650-1200 m.
